The Coming Wave - 1 Nov 26

Apple, Ryanair, Ferrari, Applovin, ARM, Qualcomm, McDonalds, Berkshire Hathaway, Pfizer, Amgen, US Midterms

Bonjour!

After two hectic weeks across global markets, the flow of earnings is far from over. While headline mega-cap tech has cooled slightly, this week brings a crucial cross-section of global commerce, corporate capital allocation, and political risk.

Here is what we are tracking across technology, consumer spending, healthcare, and the macro tape.

1. Tech & Semis: Disciplined Hardware vs. Mobile Ad Reality

  • Apple AAPL 0.00%↑ : All eyes will be on how Cupertino performs. The recently released Fold phone (the Duo) has generated evident demand alongside a few early release hiccups. Coming late in the quarter though, its direct earnings impact will likely be muted. More importantly, Apple continues to avoid the hyper-scale AI capital expenditure spree seen across peer tech giants. So far, that disciplined balance sheet approach has served them well, but markets will scrutinize whether that restraint holds.

  • AppLovin APP 0.00%↑ : Once a market darling powered by high-margin mobile ad tech, the stock has pulled back this year following missed estimates.

  • Arm & Qualcomm: Providing a granular read on core semiconductor and mobile chip demand, both reports will help clarify whether AI integration is genuinely sustaining chip demand downstream.

2. The Consumer Barometer: From Discount Air Travel to Maranello Supercars

  • Ryanair: This report will act as a bellwether for experiential, budget consumer travel across Europe and the budget consumer as a whole. While Ryanair typically maintains robust fuel hedging, we will watch whether cost pressures or fare resistance are testing margin durability.

  • McDonald’s MCD 0.00%↑ : Sitting squarely in the everyday staple category, McDonald’s will reveal how middle- and lower-income balance sheets are holding up. Are consumers trading down, or pulling back entirely? Recent data across the sector has looked mixed.

  • Ferrari RACE 0.00%↑ : At the polar opposite end of the spectrum, Ferrari provides visibility into ultra-high-net-worth resilience. Luxury demand trends here will test whether top-tier pricing power remains immune to wider macro slowdowns.

3. Pharma Renewal & Precision Medicine

Healthcare continues its quiet structural revival:

  • Amgen AMGN 0.00%↑ & Pfizer PFE 0.00%↑ : Both report amid shifting product pipelines and shifting consumer sentiment post-pandemic.

  • Upcoming Insight: In two weeks, we will be diving much deeper into this thematic shift with Mark Dainty and Paulina Zucker of the Blue Box Asset Management Precision Medicine Fund. With rapid advances in GLP-1s, AI drug discovery, and tailored medicine driving strong returns, this is a sector seeing genuine renewal.

4. Berkshire Hathaway: Post-Buffett Capital Strategy Under the Lens

With Greg Abel now leading operations since the beginning of the year, Berkshire Hathaway presents two major areas of focus:

  • Portfolio Accounting Volatility: Under U.S. GAAP, mark-to-market fluctuations in Berkshire’s massive public equity portfolio flow straight through net income, producing headline earnings swings that do not reflect underlying operating performance.

  • Capital Return Debate: The elephant in the room remains the cash hoard. Speculation is rising around whether Berkshire will consider initiating a dividend. In our view, paying a regular dividend would mark an unnecessary departure from Warren Buffett’s long-standing compounding philosophy—and not necessarily a welcome shift for long-term holders.

Don’t miss: we’re talking to Brett Gardner about his book, Buffett’s Early Investments this coming Friday - details here

5. Macro Pulse: Midterm Volatility Ahead

On the political front, the U.S. midterms take center stage. Current polling points toward Democrats retaking the House. While divided government introduces legislative checks and balances that can stabilize policy over the long haul, near-term political realignment typically sparks market volatility. Expect turbulence around the tape.

Community Note: Upcoming Conversations

  • Brett Gardner on Buffett’s Early Investments: We’re sitting down with Brett Gardner to explore his outstanding book detailing Warren Buffett’s formative decades. Far from simple luck or passive value investing, Buffett’s early compound record was driven by a masterclass combination of activist interventions, disciplined valuation, and opportunistic growth. Details here

  • Blue Box Precision Medicine Call: Stay tuned for access details to hear how Mark Dainty and Paulina Zucker are capturing the intersection of biotechnology, GLP-1s, and AI. Friday Nov 13th.

Have a great week, keep an eye on how the wave breaks, and we’ll check back in at week’s end.
